This past week my son and I were discussing the tragedy that is life in this world, and he let me know that he had recently been informed that America is in dire straits and that he needs to keep up with Fox News to understand just how bad things are. Whenever someone says we need to keep up with Fox News or some other "conservative" media outlet I immediately think of this post from Joe Carter. During his brief time on the Huckabee campaign Joe interacted at length with the mainstream media and says that he generally got a fair shake from the MSM, save the "conservat... [read more]
add to discussionI'm back from vacation now - regular blogging will resume shortly. Also, the problem with our domain at church has been fixed so I should be able to get your e-mails now.
add to discussionIf I have seemed out of touch this past week, it's because I have been. We're vacationing and most of the time I am out of wifi range, but I can occasionally use someone else's computer or a public computer. And, it will be this way through next Monday. Also, our church's e-mail account has been down for about a week so I haven't been able to get any e-mails to that account - the folks back home are working on it but I don't have an e.t.a. for when it's going to be ready. So, major apologies if you have tried to reach me and haven't been able to. If you have an e... [read more]
add to discussionBen Ament was being funny with this, but this is actually very profound - it dovetails nicely with my belief that some people try to be more holy than God. "It's a sin to bore people with the Gospel." ~ Jim Rayburn "It's a sin to make up your own sins." ~ Ben Arment I couldn't agree more Ben!
add to discussion1. I had nothing to do with this - Alligator Found in Glen Burnie. 2. If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a Proverbs 31 woman your wife. Joe Carter quotes Forbes magazine as saying that "career women" don't make very good very good wives. But if statistics show that you are more likely to be divorced if you marry a career woman then a man who avoids marrying a career woman is less likely--statistically speaking and all other things being equal--to get divorced. The trouble with all of that is that the "career woman" who is allegedly the b... [read more]
add to discussionThis is a scream. Here's some tidbits from a manual on sabotage - steps you need to take to sabotage an organization. I got this from Joe Carter who says that in order to sabotage things you need to act like a 2008 manager. I would add that this also sounds like church board meetings, or presbytery meetings or gener . . . oh never mind. (1) Insist on doing everything through “channels.” Never permit short-cuts to be taken in order to expedite decisions. (2) Make “speeches.” Talk as frequently as possible and at great length. Illustrate your “points” by long anecdotes... [read more]
add to discussionLet me invite you to go read this post from my friends at Peacemaker Ministries, which quotes Dietrich Bonhoeffer on complaining about the church. I am tempted to copy and paste the whole thing but in order to get you over on their blog (and hopefully subscribing to their feed!) I'll just give you a few snippets from the extended quote: "A pastor should not complain about his congregation, certainly never to other people, but also not to God. A congregation has not been entrusted to him in order that he should become its accuser before God and men. When a person becomes alienated... [read more]
add to discussionHey everyone - looking for a little help and input here. My friend Tara Barthel e-mailed me and said that since I added that Twitter feed on the sidebar her browser is crashing every time she loads up Jollyblogger. It''s only my blog that causes it. So, I am wondering if any of you have had that experience - if so, I'll drop the Twitter feed. I may go ahead and drop it anyway, since I mainly wanted it for our General Assembly. But either way, if you have had any problems viewing my blog could you drop me a quick comment? Thanks!
add to discussionThe vote has been taken on the matter discussed in the last post - the GA approved the recommendation of the Bills and Overture Committee that we not form a study committee on the issue of women serving in diaconal ministry. In the prior post I was asked for my take on it. First of all, I'll say that I voted against the recommendation of the B&O committee, I did want to see a study committee. But I have to say that I think the debate itself was handled well on both sides and that this was one of the most refreshing floor debates I have ever seen at the General Assembly, es... [read more]
add to discussionIt's about 2:30 in Dallas at the PCA General Assembly and we are discussing the issue of women's deacons here. I thought I would just give quick overview of what is actually happening here to alleviate any potential confusion. An overture has been offered to the General Assembly asking that a study committee be formed to address the issue of women serving in diaconal ministries. That is important - at this time we are not debating whether or not women should or should not be allowed to serve as deacons, we are debating whether or not a study committee should be formed. Thus,... [read more]
