Many folks who are close to us have been encountering various trials as of late.  As is the intended result of such trials, we are bearing these together (Gal. 6.2). I recently came across this hymn by John Newton (and no, I don’t think his ‘cross’ is this wig that he is rocking).  What I really enjoy about this is the way in which he biblically asserts God’s blessed answer to growth and grace by providing a unique trial. This is the perspective that we must own the day before we are besieged by a divinely ordered trial so that the day of it we might be informed an... [read more]

How do you consolidate into one little book an era that has had thousands of volumes written on it?  Well, you have to cut a lot of stuff out, of course.  But what makes this book by Stephen Nichols so helpful is what he puts in and how he does it. Nichols is a flat out terrific writer.  He is able simultaneously write in an informative and entertaining way.  His priority is to show that church history matters and that history should be fun.  Thankfully, he is aided by some pretty interesting characters in the Reformation period. The chapter titles bear this out: 1. Five Hundred Yea... [read more]

This weekend I downloaded several very NICE songs for free.  And I was blessed in sermon prep to hear these glorious truths sung afresh. First, I am excited to learn that the corporate singing from the Together for the Gospel 2008 conference will be compiled into kind of a live album.  I believe it will be released shortly.  But in the meantime they have permitted the free download of 3 tracks led by Bob Kauflin. I am totally down with this cd.  On one level, the truths that are sung are so affection stirring and praise swelling.  But on another level, you have these thousands of men s... [read more]

1 Kings 19:9 9 There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Elijah had experiences that few of us will ever share. In this very occasion he is coming off of a hundred mile hike through some rough terrain. This of course is due to the fact that the wicked Jezebel has issued a note on his head for his part in first embarrassing and then slaughtering hundreds of her beloved prophets. He is on the run and seems to be at the end of his rope. He says, “It is enough; now, O LORD... [read more]

We all know that life is filled with painful, heart wrenching experiences. Sometimes these experiences are spread out and sometimes they occur concurrently.  The question is never ‘if’ but ‘when’ we think of pain and suffering.  After all, we live in a cursed world. Recently some friends of ours found out that they were going to be enduring a prolonged period of emotional and physical suffering.  From the moment these friends found out about it they reflected the grace of God in their lives.  They did not shy from the pain, grief and uncertainty.  Instead they a... The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7.23-25) Who is the one who condemns? Christ Jesus is He who died, yes, rather who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who also intercedes for us. (Romans 8.34) “It is a consoling thought that Christ is praying for us, even... I love how the gospel floods all of life.  There is truly not a corner of our worldview and experience that the reality of Christ and his victory do not encroach upon. This past Sunday I preached a sermon on Titus 3, specifically the need to be a gospel centered citizen.  I serve in a context with a large military context so it was fitting to be reminded of the fact that no matter who the commander in chief is, there is still someone above him who is giving the Christian his/her marching orders.  Paul uses the gospel to model and motivate faithful Christian living not only to people in t... John Piper discloses his thoughts about the US elections being held tomorrow (original article). The outline is: Womanhood Race Abortion Prophetic perspective Sovereignty of God Gospel I think this is a very helpful and refreshing video.  I particularly enjoyed his comments on #’s 3-6.  I think he was dead on and a voice that needed to be heard. In particular, his comments with respect to the prophetic perspective, gospel, sovereignty and abortion. As far as the issue of having a woman vice president or commander in chief being unbiblical (or as he said, he has a problem with thi... [read more]
